October’s Best

msnbc_october09Hard to believe that it’s already that time again. Time for the 20 coolest images from space and science in the past month, as collected by MSNBC.

The picture you see at right is of Canadian billionaire Guy Laliberte (better known as the guy who founded Cirque du Soleil) after returning from a 12-day trip to the International Space Station that reportedly cost him a cool $35 million. For that kind of money, we hope he at least got a souvenir t-shirt.

There’s plenty more to see among these 20 images, including lava on Mars, the birth of an iceberg and a spectacular galactic collision. But wait, there’s more! A professor from Central Michigan University has pieced together more than 3,000 photographs to create a panoramic image of the Milky Way that allows us to see stars 1,000 times fainter than the human eye could detect on its own.

Ah, science. Always coming up with something new to blow our minds.
